How Toastmasters works
Liberty Toastmasters is one of more than a hundred Toastmasters clubs in San Diego. It was founded in 1980 by Libertarians and has grown to include anyone who wants to get better at public speaking.
What is a Toastmasters club?
A Toastmasters club is a group that meets regularly to practice speaking and leading. There's no teacher at the front of the room. Members learn by giving speeches, filling meeting roles and giving each other feedback, in a relaxed, supportive setting. You pick your own speech topics and set your own goals.
Why a small club helps
Liberty has always been a small, friendly club. Because of that, everyone who comes can take on a speaking or evaluation role at almost every meeting, so you get more practice and reach your goals faster.
Your first visit
As a guest, you'll have three chances to speak, all optional:
- At the start, when the VP of Membership introduces you
- During Table Topics, where anyone can answer an impromptu question
- At the end, when guests are asked for feedback on the meeting
No RSVP needed. Just come by on a Thursday at 7:00 PM.
Speeches and Pathways
Prepared speeches are 5 to 7 minutes. Members work through Pathways, the Toastmasters education program, which guides you through speech projects that build specific skills. Every speech gets a spoken evaluation from another member, so you always leave knowing what worked and what to try next.
Leadership, too
Leading a meeting as Toastmaster, running Table Topics or serving as a club officer builds leadership skills you can use at work and everywhere else.
