Meeting agenda and roles

Every Liberty Toastmasters meeting follows the same basic agenda. Here's what a typical Thursday looks like, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.

Table Topics Master Table Topics (1 to 2 minutes each)

Everyone, members and guests alike, is welcome to answer a question on the spot. Answers run 0:45 to 1:15, plus a 15-second grace period.

Break
7:40 Toastmaster Prepared speeches
  • Reconvene the meeting
  • Introduce each speaker (speech length plus a 30-second grace period)
Speakers Two to three prepared speeches

Speakers use Pathways, the Toastmasters education program, to build their speeches and skills.

  • 5 to 7 minute speeches
  • One minute of silence after each speech for written comments
Toastmaster Wrap up the speeches
  • Timer's report on the speakers
  • Vote for Best Speaker
  • Introduce the General Evaluator

  • Return the lectern to the President
8:30 President Adjourn
  • Guest comments and feedback on the meeting
  • VP of Education on upcoming roles
  • Adjourn the meeting

Meeting roles

Members rotate through these roles. Each one is a chance to practice a different skill.

Toastmaster
Hosts the meeting, sets the theme and introduces each part of the evening.
Table Topics Master
Asks impromptu questions and calls on people to answer them. Guests are welcome to take a turn.
General Evaluator
Leads the evaluation part of the meeting and gives feedback on the meeting as a whole.
Speech Evaluator
Gives one speaker spoken feedback on what worked and what to try next time.
Grammarian
Introduces the Word of the Day, then reports on good word choices and anything that stood out.
Crutch-word Counter
Counts filler words like "um," "ah" and "so," then reports the totals.
Timer
Times each speaker and shows green, yellow and red signals so they know where they stand.
Literary Corner
Reads a short passage from a book they recommend.
Thought or Joke of the Day
Opens the meeting with a short thought or joke.
